media: depicts Wonder Woman as a thin, pale, conventionally feminine, white cis woman with no body hair, prominent breasts, and loose, flowing locks
me, banging pots and pans together as I march around the room: FOOLS AND COWARDS FOOLS AND COWARD FOOLS AND COWARDS FOOLS AND COWARDS
“all the amazons are High Femme because it’s themiscyran culture” oh yeah of course an isolated all woman culture is going to just happen to conform exactly to what is considered beautiful womanhood in dress, hairstyling, etc. in American culture also THAT DOESNT EXPLAIN WHY THERES NO FAT PEOPLE. it doesn’t explain the overwhelming lack of diversity in both body types and demographics! just say that you think this model is the Default Woman and leave! also if you think no themiscyrans would have visible disabilities delete your fucking blog!
two more additions:
1) the justification that WW and amazons in general are conventionally feminine as a strategy to differentiate themselves from men is nonsense because a) they live in a separatist society where they have no idea what is happening in Man’s World, much less what the expectations for femininity are and b) why would they want to let Man’s World expectations dictate how they style themselves, and ideologically problematic because it implies that exaggerated gender and sexual dimorphism is normal, natural, healthy, and progressive.
promoting the idea that performing conventional femininity is the way to show that you’re a woman and proud of it is incredibly cruel to butch and gender nonconforming women. showing Wonder Woman, as a feminist superhero, as completely distant from butch and gnc women announces that those women are not people you seek to uplift, and that those women are not part of your feminism.
2) there is an unwillingness among creators to imagine a Wonder Woman, or in fact any strong superheroine, whose bodytype could not be described as “wwe diva, but hourglassier” and people who make a very big deal out of imagining female characters as Beefy do not break out of this. drawing women tall and with slightly broader shoulders, but keeping fatless waists and large, emphasized breasts is not actually drawing diverse body types. it is not body positivity. it is shifting the exact societal convention slightly more toward muscular, and not even very far for that! as though athleticism were a cookie cutter, as though there’s a way that Strong Women look and it just happens to be right about exactly how women are told to look. Alejandra Jiménez, Sarah Robles, and Julie Bell are all real human beings. real women athletes look all KINDS of ways. just think about it!
