when people say there’s no natural affinity between LGB and trans people, like, as though LGBT is a forced acronym with no particular reason to be together, it always surprises me because… in recent history, so many trans people have come out of gay scenes (trans women who spend years in gay men’s spaces, trans men who spend years in gay women’s spaces) and habe often continued to spend time in those spaces after coming out. so that’s weird. I mean, watch Paris is burning, read stone Butch blues, and tell me the association between LGB and trans people is totally random. but also when you go back further, the very formation of modern western conceptions of LGBT identities was based in the idea of “sexual inversion”, that is, psychological gender variance. mainstream media has barely started differentiating between gay men and trans women. the cultural association between LGB and T people runs deep in media, medicine, and how our communities have organized for hundreds of years. just my little opinion.
