people don’t talk enough about the fact that early LGBT theorists activists and theorists, and the people who created the language used to talk about sexuality, were, themselves, LGBT. the man who invented the word homosexual, Magnus Hirschfield? Gay. Karl Heinrich Ulrichs? Gay and considered his orientation reflective of a third-gender status. Karl-Maria Kertbeny, never married and wrote diaries about same-sex encounters and his fear of legal persecution. Alfred Kinsey was bi! but people don’t mention this, or not right off the bat, because they’d rather let the assumption stand that gay people were just hiding in the dark until benevolent heterosexuals discovered them. these aren’t coincidences or peculiarities of their biographies. on any consideration, it’s obvious that being LGBT has been the driving motivation behind theory and activism since the very beginning.
