I have a section from Whipping Girl assigned for intro to gender studies and it starts off with Julia Serano talking about how transgender activism has failed transsexuals and I, with my years of acquaintance with the phenomenon of non-transitioning individuals paying little heed to the needs of those who do or would transition, and my already-downloaded full copy of Whipping Girl available to reference for a clearer understanding of Serano’s definition of terms within the text, feel confident that I know what she’s talking about. I have absolutely no clue what the hapless cisgenders of the class are going to make of it. I hope it’s handled comprehensively by the lecturer, or discussed by the TAs, or something, because I do not believe people are independently going to produce the right conclusions. I have no idea why this section on cisnormativity was assigned and not Trans Woman Manifesto or something.
