started watching One Day At A Time bc I’ve been seeing a bit about it lately including that it has a nonbinary character. turns out it’s got several! the MC’s daughter is an, uhhhh, 15/16 year cis lesbian and her friend group displayed is the “feminist gamers of echo park”. one of them is a she/her lesbian, one is they/them and IDs as gay, one uses ze/zir and no word on zir orientation (the episode title is “To Zir With Love, but ze only has about one line) and uhhh I forget the last friend. anyway, the daughter and her friends are portrayed as kind of foolishly SJW-y interesting that a big current teen stereotype is a "foolhardy and unrealistic” enthusiasm for social justice.
the show does better with pronouns than Billions does with Taylor Mason, imo. it shows various neopronouns, doesn’t do the weird list item transposition that Asia Kate Dillion does [who says “they, theirs, and them”?], and shows that it’s also important for people to list pronouns even if people would guess correctly. the older family members and the grandma’s romantic interest react to the pronouns with some semi-jokey confusion, but use the right pronouns for the right people.
the show presents a series of very realistic situations, but in a way where I’m concerned that cis people are going to draw the wrong conclusions without the context of actually knowing a bunch of nonbinary people. the lesbian daughter has a crush on the she/her lesbian and ends up dating the they/them nb. in reality, this kind of thing happens all the time. there are lots of people who ID as lesbian and are willing to date [the kind of nonbinary person who dates lesbians.] (idk if this person will ever articulate themself as an nb lesbian, as female aligned, or whatever, but they seem to be kind of a type.) in cis interpretation of fiction, though, I’m concerned that people are going to see this situation and basically understand the they/them nb as a gnc lesbian with pretensions, and not, uh, understand that that whole “trans thing” people keep talking about is relevant here.
anyway, I like the mom and the brother. it seems like a fun and fairly emotionally earnest show, and I think I’m going to watch more.
