i read this as “meyer lemons are the only food that deserve to exist” and i couldn’t disagree

my mom’s house has a lemon tree that regularly grows meyer lemons the size of the dragon eggs in game of thrones and some day one of them will hatch a perfect spirit into the world. this is what i believe.

replied to your post “the 90s fantasy aesthetic of mixing totally modern (at the time)…”

I believe that would be Urban Fantasy. And might I recommend the Sandman Slim novels by Richard Kadrey to start you off!

i read a decent amount of urban fantasy (focusing on paranormal romance, of course :0P) and i’ve actually read one of the sandman slim books, back when i was a wee thing getting weekly free downloads from the barnes and noble online store on my nook. iirc i enjoyed it decently well but it isn’t exaaaaactly the thing im thinking of. although i don’t remember it that well - i forget what the sequences in hell or the otherworld or whatever are like, and how high fantasy-y they are or aren’t.

the thing im thinking about is like… basically, a combination of castles-and-ogres-and-wizards high fantasy pulp elements with the day to day spirit (and any amount of material elements) of modernity, but not a realistic modern setting. bureaucracies and annoying coworkers and putting off declaring your college major, but like, it’s wizard college.

a lot of portal fantasies are like this, and some urban fantasy too. stuff that is like what i’m looking for: books by diana wynne jones including Dark Lord of Derkholm, The Merlin Conspiracy, and Howl’s Moving Castle. Witch and Wombat by Carolyn Cushman. esther friesner books. Some of A Lee Martinez’s stuff? the Discworld books that deal very heavily with Modernity (e.g. Soul Music, Going Postal). a lot of stuff that has this combo is comedy, but im not necessarily looking for comedy specifically.

visually, the thing i’m thinking about is kind of exemplified by the image Curses, Inc by tristan elwell

[id: illustration of a real old fashioned crone with flowing white hair nearly the same color as her shawl. she’s levitating, cross-legged, in a magical circle, in front of a bookcase of leather volumes and mysterious containers. some candles burn on tall, wrought iron stands while she types on a blocky old computer with a CRT monitor and her black cat bats at the floating computer mouse.]

anyway, having articulated this a bit more thoroughly, i think i’ll trawl through some goodreads lists for myself. it’s recreational.
