i think this is gonna be the first actual nonjewish religious event ive ever attended so i am like. genuinely curious. i think this is going to be a really interesting experience where i learn a lot. about, uh, catholic mass. ive ben in extremely a large number of catholic churches but iirc never really while any services were on. so it’s exciting!
mass was really interesting! idk if I mentioned it but I was going to a Deaf church for my ASL class. I think I learned some stuff I might not otherwise have had occasion to learn about like, communicative techniques in Deaf social settings (e.g. one of the people on stage, not the priest, Idk what this person’s job title is but they introduced bible segments? anyway when audience members had prayers for the sick this person mirrored their signing so everyone could see. I would not otherwise have known that this is like, a thing people do.) but also I had an interesting time at mass! generally! it was surprisingly simple and easy to follow (most Jewish services I’ve been to have involved… a lot of sitting and standing and sitting and standing and bowing and Hebrew) and also… I’ve only been to jewish services that were either 1) WAY ritzy or 2) directly next to the ocean and the rabbi has to talk over various marine animals or 3) in Spain and a plainclothes security officer asks why you’re there and who you know in the congregation. so it was interesting going to just, a normal sedate routine religious service in a normal sedate religious building. also I wanted to be as unobtrusive and polite as possible so I dressed nicely and conservatively as a woman and let me tell you my current/new glasses do NOT look good with a headband.
