For years I’ve heard lesbian trans girls say they’re the minority, and the straight girls say they are. Certainly in terms of media representation both camps are right since we’re all underrepresented.
But, the 2015 US Transgender Survey, which has a statistically significant sample size, does confirm who is more represented in sheer numbers.
Among trans women, the largest percentage self-identify as “gay, lesbian, or same-gender loving” (27%), by a healthy margin. Next is bisexual at 20%, and straight or heterosexual at 19%. Of course if you add together bisexual, pansexual, and queer, that would be the highest total at 42%, but respondents were able to make multiple selections, so there may be overlap between those categories.
It’s the inverse with trans guys, with 23% identifying as straight, and 12% choosing gay (so much for the “testosterone turns all trans guys gay” fear), but with the biggest percentage identifying specifically as queer (24%).
I’m sure whole theses could be written about those breakdowns and how they reflect gender expectations in our society, but at least that’s some hard data so we don’t have to squabble.
