BEST Products was a chain of catalog showroom retail stores founded in 1957, notable for their facades designed by SITE (”Sculpture In The Environment”) in the 1970s and early 1980s. They filed for bankruptcy in 1997 and currently all but one of their buildings have been either demolished or altered to remove their distinctive features; the one exception is their “forest building” which now serves as a church.

happy to see this post, as this is a hard thing to google

instead of queer or lgbt we all call ourselves third gender

this isnt a serious post but “third gender” has genuinely been used to describe every form of gender variance and non-straight orientation under the sun. the only con for reappropriating this historical/sociological/anthropological phrase is the potential for gnc cishet men and women to latch onto it but like. imo its less likely to happen than it does with queer and also i think that straight “cisgender” people who feel such a strong attachment to transgressing gender boundaries that they want to call themselves third gender should probably be allowed to. this term has been used asa self descriptor by many [community members] throughout history.

lgbt people have been creating wildly complicated and sometimes badly-advised microlabel taxonomies since at least the 1860s. karl heinrich ulrichs identified and created labels for:

Urningin (or occasionally the variants Uranierin, Urnin, and Urnigin): afabs attracted to women, who he saw as having a “male psyche”

Urning: amabs attracted to men, who he saw as having a “female psyche”

Dioningin: cishet women

Dioning: cishet men

Uranodioningin: afab bisexual

Uranodioning: amab bisexual

Zwitter: intersex

Urningthum, “male homosexuality” (or urnische Liebe, homosexual love) was expanded with the following terms:

Mannling: masc urnings

Weibling: fem urnings who are into masc guys

Manuring: fem straight guys

Zwischen-Urning: “Adult male who is not masculine or feminine with a sex drive towards young normal'chaps’(Bursche)” <- i’m ripping and rephrasing this from wikipedia and i dont even know what to do with this. im extremely suspicious that it’s a pedophile thing

Conjunctive, with tender and passionate feelings for men <- homoromantic homosexual

Disjunctive, with tender feelings for men but passionate feelings for women <- homoromantic heterosexual

Virilisierte Mannlinge: “straight acting” urnings

Uraniaster or uranisierter Mann: straight guys who are “situationally homosexual” e.g. in the military

a lot of these categories work really well (in the frame of mind that collapses being-like-a-woman and being-attracted-to-men, at least) and a lot of these categories absolutely suck and do not need to be identity labels. that’s been the way of it!
