I still maintain that fursonas are the prototypical example of otherkin, do you agree about that
I agree that otherkin has significant historical and current connections with the furry community but it actually originates in fantasy inspired pagan communities! the original “otherkin” were non-elves who associated with elfinkin communities. otherkin was originally highly associated with fantasy creatures, while furries were more accustomed to the term therianthropy
broadly, here are some differences between kin IDs and fursonas (though these don’t apply to every person’s experiences or interpretations of the terms):
otherkin involves a perception that one is spiritually or psychologically one’s kintype(s) vs. a fursona is often a character who one creates and then roleplays recreationally (or dresses as, commissions art of, etc.)
otherkin includes fictionkin, identification with another creator’s exact characters. fursonas are generally the creation of the individual, even when they’re part of species created by others (e.g. chakat ‘sonas)

kin: in some sense other than the physical, I am a bear
fursona: I have created a character that is a bear. this character may be based on me in some way, and/or I may roleplay and/or fursuit as this character and/or create or commission art of this character
me: I like bears, and feel like I relate to how I perceive them (lumbering around, desire to eat and sleep, gentle face) and desire to embody some of their traits (solidity, hairiness). also my fursona is me as a bear

unrelated to previous posts but I can’t stand Bizarre Surrealist heterofuck movies. ooooohhhh we’re being so weeeeird and breaking so many boundariessssss I transgressed more social norms than you skyping my ex about their user interface project. the two things I can’t stand: 1) awful, grating, normative heterosexuality and 2) the lie that well-fros negativity is the most fascinating and revolutionary thing you can portray*
*“The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain. If you can’t lick ‘em, join 'em. If it hurts, repeat it. But to praise despair is to condemn delight, to embrace violence is to lose hold of everything else.” – Ursula K. LeGuin

when Junkrat kills an enemy Roadhog and it triggers the “who’s on top now?” voice line. there’s no heterosexual explanation for that
this voice line was deemed inappropriate and not included in the Russian translation of the game
there is no heterosexual explanation for that
Yes there is. Kill count, like Legolas and Gimli.
ah, the heterosexual friends, Legolas and Gimli.

Ok but nick that last paragraph is a way to be kin. Thats how i feel about my kins dude
thrilling conclusion to this saga:
1) we had a half hour conversation about changes in the perception of kin on tumblr over the past five years and our personal definitions of kin, and how they impact our decisions to claim or not claim kin IDs
2) it turned out that in the entire time I’ve had, and frequently mentioned, my fursona, journey did not realize that I, personally, am a furry. they assumed that my references to furries, reblogs of furry content, and possession of a fursona were a form of “scholarly appreciation”
