We watched as the travelling man stepped forward: obviously someone of importance, judged by his fine clothes and the long thin sword that hung at one hip in an ornate scabbard. The merchant straightened in his chair, and motioned to one of his servants to bring a scale out to the counter; we saw that another servant began pouring a thin yellow liquid into a metal cup behind them. The important-looking traveler produced from beneath his vest a vial that shimmered with green light in the sun: the strange jade-dust used as currency in this kingdom, but with which we had yet to see actually exchanged (my companion later suggested that it was perhaps used only by aristocrats or burghers, similar to the bullion-bars used for the settling of royal accounts in our own lands).
