I’m (recreationally) writing an essay about gender variance in the Vorkosigan saga and here are some quotes. this is a series that was recommended to me on lists about nonbinary representation btw

hapless heirs of a century-past genetic project of dubious merit.(Brothers in Arms, 1989)

a centuries-past genetic-social experiment every bit as bizarre, in Miles’s private opinion, as anything rumored to be done for money by House Ryoval’s ethics-free surgeons. A fringe effort of Betan egalitarianism run amok, hermaphroditism had not caught on, and the original idealists’ hapless descendants remained a minority on hyper-tolerant Beta Colony. (Borders of Infinity, 1989)

Bel Thorne was a Betan hermaphrodite, minority descendant of a century-past social/genetic experiment that had not caught on. (The Vor Game, 1990)

Captain Bel Thorne was a Betan hermaphrodite, a race that was remnant of an early experiment in human genetic and social engineering that had succeeded only in creating another minority. (Mirror Dance, 1994)

hey Lois McMaster Bujold what the FUCK

@bananayucca I’m not convinced that she’s aware that even the *word* intersex exists. as a mildly, uh, sex development variant person, myself, reading and thinking about Vorkosigan saga stuff always has an element of “fantasizing about going up to Lois McMaster Bujold and asking why she doesn’t say it to my fucking face”.

beyond the intersexism, Bujold has obviously known that trans people exist for quite a while, but seems to write under the assumption that none of us will ever pick up one of her books.

it can be hard to say “the reason that this thing makes me happy is because I’ve internalised unfair negative perceptions of myself and this alleviates them” because it can feel like it means you don’t get to be happy like that, but honestly: loving yourself feels even better.
