The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous startups in Silicon Valley, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five startups?” // “If I find forty-five there,” God said, “I will not destroy it.”
…
The two venture capitalists arrived at Palo Alto in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. … They did go with him and entered his $0.9m one-bedroom home. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without gluten, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of Silicon Valley—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can pitch our startups to them.”

I love cons but like holy shit is the after dark culture like if the worst parts of theatre camp had barely restricted access to drugs and alcohol.

🔥ugliness is a moral failing
via http://ift.tt/2o2DfjG:
I actually really dislike when people start shit talking the appearances of people they dislike or disagree with, or who’ve done bad things. talking about how “badly” they’ve aged (how much aging has affected their appearance), insulting their skin or hair, their facial features, often they way they maintain or present their body (calling them messy, insulting their makeup, etc.) that kind of thing. it’s not necessarily that I think those people don’t deserve insults, but that I think insults about physical “ugliness” reinforce two ideas that I don’t believe in: that ugliness exists, and that anyone should care about it.
to the first: obviously anyone who’s not a nasty bigot can agree that stuff like being gender nonconforming, disabled, trans, a person of color, or a member of any other persecuted identity group with correspondingly stigmatized physical features doesn’t make you ugly. and most of us can also agree that being fat doesn’t make you ugly. that being short doesn’t make you ugly, sure, whatever.
but once it gets removed from immediately recognizable identity politics, people tend to get anywhere from thoughtless to enthusiastic about considering physical traits Bad. acne, skin that’s more dry or oily than whatever I guess the neutrogena approved average is, yellow teeth, asymmetrical facial features, unskilled application of makeup, I’m not listing these all night but like. thinking of all that stuff as bad is like… it’s fake. thinking of uniform skin, white teeth, and symmetrical faces as good is fake too, by the way.
goodness and badness concerning these traits is not real, it is literally all made up. ugliness isn’t real! beauty isn’t either! you know how you can see someone and think they look really beautiful and then you find out they did some shit and you’re like “oh, they’re ugly, they’ve got an ugly soul and it really shows” or the reverse? it’s because beauty and ugliness are opinions you form about someone based on a variety of factors, all of which are socially and emotionally influenced. anyway.
to the second: whenever people start using insults about people’s appearances what they’re say is “this person’s physical body and badness (whatever and however legitimate their badness may be) are linked”. that’s a fucking lie. it always is. furthermore, it’s a lie that makes innocent people who share those physical traits feel bad.
i don’t think everyone who does this is evil or doing serious moral harm or whatever. I just think the whole thing is a bad system.

there should be some sort of religious education available in public schools. like, history of religion or comparative theology or something. I’m sure that classes like this already exist in some school, and I know its likely that many of them are very bad and unproductive, but I think the actual topic is very important.
I see people say absolutely preposterous shit about religion on tumblr all the time because they have like, no understanding of… what in the damn hell they are talking about. a lot of the time on tumblr this manifests specifically as incredulity at and hostility toward Christian practices, because they (the certain type of leftist that my tumblr circles are mostly composed of) know that they shouldn’t talk shit about Judaism or Islam because it’s bigoted but see Christianity as fair game. and sure, it is in the sense that it’s not antisemitic or islamophobic to say nonsense about, but it’s still ignorant. I don’t even mean offensive, I’m not talking on that level, I just mean uneducated and showing a lack of understanding + a lack of willingness to even acknowledge that there’s understanding they lack. like people who are super amazed by devout Catholics believing in transubstantiation. it’s a core tenet of their faith! I’m not a catholic theologian but I promise there are people who could talk about it in such metaphysical detail it would make your head spin!
but people act like its suuuuuch incomprehensible silliness that there could never be any consideration behind because they don’t think religion is a topic worthy of respect. they don’t think that religious thought exists or that religious history matters.
obviously, this kind of disrespect happens all the time off tumblr with Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, various indigenous religions, and many more. on tumblr, too, when people don’t think about what marginalized identity they could be treading on.
without religious education, people may make the assumption that religion is completely irrational and completely thoughtless. without an awareness and appreciation of the depth and complexity of religious history and thought, and of the significance and impact of religion to believers, they seem to spout ignorant nonsense about whatever religion they haven’t been adequately convinced not to shit-talk yet. personally I think that kind of sucks!

young Samuel l Jackson as mace Windu is disconcerting to look at because his head’s so fucking smooth. it’s so smooth what the fuck
people should use libraries more when possible instead of committing piracy. why stream something illegally when you can get it fast, easy, and free from your local library, huh? uhhhh the ao3 should have a block user function.
I honestly can’t think of any particularly inflammatory autistic discourse I’ve seen. autism makes you gay. evidence: you ever go on tumblr dot com? it’s 4:24 and i’m running out of steam somewhat. youre a good pal bat

New York Theater Workshop has my favorite gender-neutral bathroom signs.
Love it!
honestly I don’t love this because it’s unclear to me whether it’s gender neutral or not? like, is this a cool funny way of saying “left is the women’s restroom, right is the men’s restroom” or are they saying “the bathrooms do not correspond to human genders”? the read I get off of “go to the urinal bathrooms if you’re a urinal user” + referring to gender is actually sex essentialism but I’m assuuuuming that’s not what’s going on here. I’m sure this is well intentioned and I don’t think it’s like, transphobic, but I would prefer a gender neutral restroom sign or “#illgowithyou” thing or whatever to this runic riddle, in terms of help figuring out where I’m supposed to piss.
