absolutely wild looking back at time you spent in irl fandom spaces and just going “oh, that was a risk factor. that was a risk factor. that was a risk factor too.” like, “being offered drugs alcohol and tobacco while very underage” cool “getting ditched by my friends around a bunch of adult strangers in public places” awesome “regularly hanging out with adults who spent a bunch of time publicly sexually fantasizing about 14 year olds” it doesn’t get any better than this! jesus.

happy 4/13 in a few hours! I’ve met people younger than me through homestuck who it’s been nearly impossible to hang out with IRL because all they do at meetups is smoke, and/or drink and/or smoke and/or talk about smoking/drinking/smoking. young LGBT people are at already-increased rates of risk for substance abuse and con culture encourages imo risky behavior with drugs and alcohol

there’s a lot of stuff that’s like “oh well that turned out fine” but turning out fine doesn’t mean it wasn’t bad, actually? like, if you get too high to be left alone and you friends leave you in a hotel room with a stranger, that’s still a pretty bad situation even if that person turns out to be someone nice who will give you money to order pizza. like, con culture encourages the most comically risky behavior on the basis that “oh, con people are nice and safe and cool” THATS A HAZARDOUS GAMBLE IMO.

Lenin walks around the world.
Frontiers cannot bar him.
Neither barracks nor barricades impede.
Nor does barbed wire scar him.
Lenin walks around the world.
Black, brown, and white receive him.
Language is no barrier.
The strangest tongues believe him.
Lenin walks around the world.
The sun sets like a scar.
Between the darkness and the dawn
There rises a red star.

the identity politics prevalent in neurodivergence discourse – and even any social interaction with neurodivergence – is like, pretty clearly a perpetuation of hegemonic structures of normality. we still cling to the right to prioritize and privilege certain thoughts & behaviors as Good And Correct, but we can make an exception for neurodivergence as long as we realize that its neurodivergence, describe it as neurodivergence, and identify the specific neurodivergence.

show me where your compassion for neurodivergent people is when theres no discernible difference between a stereotypical teenager’s unproductive laziness & emotionlessness and depression. show me where your compassion for neurodivergent people is when someones having a meltdown and you scold them for being a brat but their sensory issues arent taken seriously by you or anyone around them, or theyre only taken seriously when they seek professional diagnosis. show me where your compassion for neurodivergent people is when you only empathize or seek to understand someones explosion of anger when its explanations has capital letters or falls “within reason”.

what im trying to say is that if we deem some forms of neurodivergence excusable and others inexcusable, or some deserving of compassion and others not deserving of compassion, its blatantly obvious that its being used to maintain the discursive boundaries that capitalism uses to preserve a well-disciplined class of subjects. the ways that we rely on discourse in its systems of formalized signification do nothing but preserve the unlivable & alienating conditions our society is formed under. if we cant extend compassion towards thoughts and behaviors that would essentially qualify as neurodivergence but arent identified as such, then our compassion towards neurodivergence is nothing but exception-making, an inauthentic and insincere kind of compassion.

I feel like people might read this and think it makes sense as an abstract point but never really connect it to reality.  Which would be such a shame since this is like, the crux of ableism that in all of our efforts to fix things no one really comes close to.

It has to be okay to act how sick people act.  Not because they are sick so they have an excuse.  No, those behaviors just have to be okay.

So much of my life is feeling awful because I know the things I do, the life I lead, is considered wrong.  And “no, but it’s okay for you” doesn’t help.  Like, every moment of self doubt or glimmer of feeling better completely demolishes my “excuse” for being sick?  That’s supposed to help?  That’s not enough.

Skeptical, conditional acceptance is not a fair thing to impose on people for their whole lives.  It’s just a more insidious rejection.

kosher for Passover is good actually because normally if I eat just a slice of untoasted bread with butter on it I feel that I’ve failed at cooking as a concept but if I do that with matzoh it’s not my fault, it’s just the holiday and I can’t be blamed.
