i think upholstered furniture with figurative (as opposed to abstract) prints is nice. I like a nice floral, the chairs at my high school library had a bookshelf print and I thought that was nice. sure, prints can be ugly, but plain single colors, well, it’s harder to go wrong with them (I guess) but they are usually kind of boring, and aside from dark blacks, they do nothing to hide stains. there’s nothing wrong with them inherently, but i think patterned upholstery gets an unfairly bad rap in comparison to the factory-produced minimalism of unpatterned upholstery.

Wow they actually gave Cisco a moment of mutual attraction with someone where it wasn’t played for laughs that she was attracted to him what show am I watching

Like my girl Cindy genuinely wanted to hit that /immediately/ like thank you for finally acknowledging that Cisco is actually an attractive human person and not just in a “funny guy” way that was getting annoying

Cisco Ramon is like, almost unbearable to look at in terms of sheer physical radiance, beauty-wise, and also, a gem of a human being personality-wise, the way that he is characterized as dorky-undateable when fucking *falls on his ass* “uhhhhh sorry I gotta go” trapezoid-head Barry Allen is framed as a romantic protagonist, is unbelievable, it’s literally not credible.

A Medieval Gay Brawl in the Synagogue On Yom Kippur

Sometimes the finds of the Genizah are so incredible that you have difficulty believing that it’s really there, that you are really peering through this window into the lives of medieval Jews around the Mediterranean. This story caught my attention in a footnote of Goitein’s and I thought I would post it for Yom Kippur… It’s not really magic-related, except that I think there’s a certain magic in recovering and reclaiming the past.

The fragment shown here, T-S 8J22.25 in Cambridge, is a letter from a Jewish pilgrim named Hasan ben Mu’ammal, who had gone on pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the High Holidays, Tishrei 4813 = September 1052 CE. He reports that a certain Daniel had wished to see him but he was unable to, because of “the altercation” that had happened in synagogue. Apparently, on Yom Kippur, many pilgrims had gathered from around the Mediterranean, and “a man from Tiberias and a man from [Tyre] became involved in love, and the Tiberian began fondling [?] the Tyrian in the sight of everyone… and the people from Tiberias and those from Tyre began to fight with one another and went out to […] and they brought the chief of the police to the synagogue and […] until the people calmed down.” Hasan goes on to report that Daniel had told him that “such is the behaviour of these people every day,” and concludes the letter with best wishes to the recipients (his brother Abu Nasr and family). A wild ride from start to finish. Goitein drily observes that the letter indicates that homosexuality was regarded as a “vice rather than a deadly crime… [and] it did not form the object of great social concern.”

Some trans history for trans day of visibility! Here is a poem written in 1322 by a jewish trans woman! (source and alternate translation). In case you were in need of the knowledge that yes, trans people have been around for a long, long time. [this is an english translation from hebrew]

“What an awful fate for my mother
that she bore a son.
What a loss of all benefit! …
Cursed be the one who announced to my father:
“It’s a boy! …

Woe to him who has male sons.
Upon them a heavy yoke has been placed, restrictions and constraints.
Some in private, some in public,
some to avoid the mere appearance of violation,
and some entering the most secret of places.

Strong statutes and awesome commandments,
six hundred and thirteen.
Who is the man who can do all that is written,
so that he might be spared?

… Oh, but had the artisan who made me

Were I only to have merited this, being so graced by your goodness…

What shall I say? Why cry or be bitter?
If my Father in heaven has decreed upon me
and has maimed me with an immutable deformity,
then I do not wish to remove it.
And the sorrow of the impossible
is a human pain that nothing will cure
and for which no comfort can be found.
So, I will bear and suffer
until I die and wither in the ground.
And since I have learned from the tradition
that we bless both the good and the bitter,
I will bless in a voice, hushed and weak,
Blessed are you, O Lord,
who has not made me a woman.

Edit (because it’s important to know): the last line is reference to a prayer said every morning by Jewish men, it being problematic is another conversation. I’m mentioning it because the author of the poem is pointing out that she had to say it, even though she felt the exact opposite.
