i hope this doesn’t come off in a bad way because that’s definitely not how i intend it, but i had the weird observation the other day that nearly every autistic friend i’ve ever had (and i’ve had many, as having ADHD means we have a lot of common traits and Relatable Feels in the hyperfocusing/sensory overload departments) has been a meme-loving fuck
i don’t just mean a simple meme farmer, either–i’m talking about meme connoisseurs who are always up-to-date with the latest memes and can trace their origins with alarming precision
as a meme-loving fuck myself, this has always been something i’ve enjoyed, but then i talk to my allistic and particularly entirely-neurotypical friends or send them memes and so many of them just…don’t Get It
A) #confirmed
B) My running theory is that this has to do with the fact that memes are simultaneously very formulaic- making them easy to pick up on- and very specialized- meaning there’s a metric fuckload of cool research and background you can get into for every single one of them and they tend to mesh into each other in fascinating ways.
It’s a perfect storm of having a very low cost of admission, in terms of what it takes to understand a given meme, and an enormous amount of theory and research you can fixate on and lose yourself in for days.
also!! memes can be easily used to express emotions and situations, and bond with other people. communicating the concept “I feel this way, and have observed others expressing that they feel this way as well” or “the situation that you have described is similar to my own” can be hard — We Are All [X] is simple and evocative.
memes can function as fun and effective scripts for communication with other people who know them :0)
