I hate when english teachers mark off for using natural expressive grammar on personal/creative writing assignments but I can understand it as making sure students know the standard grammar and are aware of like, when they are using sentence fragments and whatnot. like I don’t like it but I understand why and I accept it (in some contexts. obviously correcting dialogue is nonsense). but when teachers mark off for using the words “thing” or “stuff” in contexts where they’re specifically meant to convey “undefined objects and/or activities and/or events” like………. it’s literally the best word for the situation? like I understand… you want people to learn to convey things specifically. but the *specific* concept being conveyed here is “anything and/or everything”. like “maybe I’m just bad at stuff” is an infinitely more expressive sentence than “maybe I’m just bad at activities, functions, and tasks.” it’s called tone dude
