inktober day18: a litter of mimics born in the local high-class jewelry shop. that’s what they get for letting the neighbor’s curio cabinet sniff around their guard display case.

Inktober/Character design day 16!

Not a ton of time today, so I’m holding off on working on the dragon concept in favor of doing another lil DnD character!

Snickery’s parent was a dungeon (older mimics can take of the form of caves, houses, dungeons, etc.) that they were separated from as a teeny baby mimic. As an adult they want to find out about their parent and learn more about mimics in general, but have come to enjoy living amongst non-monsters as well, and try their very hardest to be a brave adventurer! As one might expect, they have a bit of an edge when it comes to dungeoneering.

I’ve been hovering around 455-465 followers for a long time despite the fact that I get new (mostly bot) followers on a regular basis, meaning either people have been unfollowing me regularly or bot followers have been getting deleted. however, I’ve been getting more notes (when I post, at least) more consistently lately, I feel. mysterious.

I’m going to finish this assignment, stop soft self-isolating, and then cut my hair

Holy fuck when did Archie comics become AWESOME

BETTY DID THAT

THE LIPSTICK INCIDENT

And now to buy aaaaaaaaaaaaall of the Archie.

Archie comics, the imprint, are doing the good shit. They’re fighting the patriarchy, Jughead is ace…

I wanna emphasize that last point: Jughead is ace! They say the word asexual in a panel! It’s not a big thing!

am I the only one who finds the imagery of a woman swiping a guy’s face with a messy slash of lipstick, kind of questioning his identity, and then him sinking stunned to the floor and her storming off. idk. vaguely discomfiting. like idk if I’m seeing patterns that aren’t here, idk the larger context, something about “taking him down a notch” by putting makeup on his face is kind of. I mean I get that its about humiliating him by calling him a misogynist not by feminizing him but dialogue aside the panels alone are just REALLY disconcerting to see. idk. anyone else seeing anything?

ok, read the comic, opinion revised. the transmisosgynistic “humiliating a presumed-dude by putting makeup on his face” angle is accidental/incidental. i still think its uncomfortable and I dislike it, but I really hate this comic for different reasons. I really really hate this. the plotline is that Betty is such a dirty masculine weirdo (because she doesn’t wear lipstick or blouses. not because she dresses in masculine manner, like, her clothes are still women’s section stuff, she has long blonde hair up in messy buns. and she’s obviously competent at performative femininity stuff, like, she’s able to style her own hair with a flat iron, she already knows how to do it) that she’s really insecure about her relationship with archie, so when some mean feminine girls offer to fix her she takes them up on it, and then when Archie is like “what the fuck I liked you before?” she’s like ITS STILL ME! which is fair but I feel like reflects the idea that this is how she’s really supposed to be? how she would really want to be? and it’s like. let women???? not be hyperfeminine???????? jesus. well, whatever. anyone who’s read this can feel free to come start some shit with me.

I think these Archie comics have actually a good illustration of a certain style of tomboyishness often portrayed in media, “unacceptably unfeminine, but in an acceptably untransgressive/non-masculine way.” it’s teal ballet flats instead of heels, carefully cuffed skinny jeans instead of skirts, messy buns instead of coiffed waves, magenta shorts instead of sundresses, pink v necks instead of blouses. unmistakably women’s clothes, just the somewhat lower maintenance, higher comfort/activity ones. enough to catch flak for not dressing “nicely”, but not enough to be masculine or even androgynous.
